Secret Cutter Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?
Evan: We've been writing our second LP  mostly . We are very excited about our new stuff
Jared : Tweaks with the new material. There's usually a 'ah ha!' moment when we know a song is basically done. So a lot of that lately.

2.In February you had released a new album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical direction of the newer material and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
Evan: I think we are taking more chances and experimenting with different ideas. The first EP was the first thing we ever recorded as a band. We've progressed quite a bit since then.
Jared: This new record followed our individual growth as well as a group and it shows from the first 7inch to Self Titled.

3.This is the first album to be released in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap between releases?
Jared: Sometimes life just happens. I don't think we would have written the record we did had it been any sooner. The music grows with us.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?
Ekim: The Lyrics on the LP are basically about everyday life.  Mood swings, Depression etc. Stories about my life and the people I know. There is a intentional ambiguity to the lyrics. I think the listener should get their own meaning out of it.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Secret Cutter'?
Evan:There is no great meaning behind it. We did want something that was a little different then the usual heavy band name. I guess its about how people have a natural inclination to never be happy, and take it out on themselves.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Evan: Our record release show was really great, people were going crazy. We would describe our stage performance as loud.
Jared: I still love our first show back in 06'. Evan played through 1/5 of the gear and we played terrible. But it still got the ball rolling and the excitement of doing something new is always cool. .

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
Evan:everywhere and anywhere.

8.The new album came out on Bethlehem Rust Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
Evan: Bethlehem Rust is our label. It was just name to put on the back of our self released LP. Its an ode to the rotting infrastructure of our home area.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your new album by fans of sludge, doom metal and grindcore?
Evan: Really great so far. The U.S. mostly. But we've shipped mail order all over the world.
Jared: I take care of the shipping and get really excited when I see orders going to Australia and Russia as well as all the domestic orders. It's the first thing I check in the morning is if there are orders or not. It's been almost all positive which is weird.

10.What is going on with some of the other musical projects that some of the band members are involved with these days?
Jared : In my spare time I do a studio project called "Orphan Donor." It's a lot of just 'hit record and see what happens' type grindcore/noise.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Jared: I'm excited about the unknown. Everything morphs and changes over time. So we're never really sure where things will end up.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Evan: I draw influences from a lot of music that isn't obviously heavy. I've been on a big Battalion of Saints kick lately.
Jared: Not a whole lot unfortunately, I still draw from Blutch, Hella, Capsule, Hot Snakes.
Ekim: I like nothing new.

13.What are some of your non musical interests?
Evan: Twin Peaks, Ancient Technology,  and what little i can understand about Quantum Theory.
Jared: Finally getting into The Wire. Soldering stuff for the studio, Comedy, upcoming VR technologies, domestic improvements.
Ekim: BMX Trail Riding. Motorcycles, Working with actual metal.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Evan: Support Vinyl !!
Jared: Stay classy!
